Empower The Less Privileged is a Non-Profit Organization that primarily serves the humanitarian, educational and skill development needs of the less privileged. We are based in Southern California, precisely in Winchester in Riverside County. The organization was founded in April 2004 by Mr & Mrs Izu-Onyia, a young and vibrant couple from Nigeria, in West Africa after coming here to pursue their studies. Izuchukwu Onyia is a Computer Scientist and Engineer and Obiageliaku Izu-Onyia is an Epidemiologist both at the Masters level. They felt led to start off this organization after they saw the vast discrepancy between technology in the US and Africa which motivated them to try to bridge the technological gap between the more privileged and the less privileged. They believe that some day this gap will be reduced to the barest minimum. They started their good works by collecting computers and other technology materials from corporate firms, colleagues and individuals and are looking into launching their crusade towards schools, government affiliated organizations and cities, etc. who are regularly upgrading their systems and have to dispose of the “older” ones. They also solicit help from any group or individuals out there that have technology materials like computers, printers, books, software, etc. that they may want to give out to help the less privileged. These materials are to be disbursed to schools, people and communities that have dire need for them and where people have no clue of what is happening on the technology radar of the world. Their arms of benevolence are going to stretch out deep into Africa where a vast majority of the population do not even have a clue of what a computer is, not to talk about what it looks like. Part of what they are looking to do is put some of the less privileged children on scholarships so that they also can become computer savvy and give back to their communities. They also want to teach the less privileged how to use the internet for research and for other meaningful uses. Therefore, the organization is also involved in addressing these other needs in order to be able to make appropriate in-roads into the lives of the less privileged and gain the traction needed to have the desired impact in the technology realm.
